Rural Waste Sorted: Making better waste choices on the farm

Managing waste on farms can be challenging, but it doesn't have to be complicated. A new New Zealand initiative, Rural Waste Sorted NZ, is helping farmers find practical ways to reduce waste, improve recycling and look after the land for future generations.

For many years, burying, burning or stockpiling waste (sometimes known as the '3Bs') have been common ways of dealing with farm waste. But there are better options available, and finding them is becoming easier.

The Rural Waste Sorted NZ website brings together practical advice, farmer experiences, helpful resources and information about recycling and disposal programmes. Its aim is to help farmers understand what waste their properties produce and find the right solutions for managing it.

Learning from other farmers

One of the most useful features of the website is a series of videos featuring farmers and industry experts sharing their experiences. They cover everything from identifying common farm waste, including plastics, chemical containers and bale wrap, to setting up effective waste management systems and getting farm teams involved.

The message is simple: you don't need to change everything overnight. Start by understanding what waste your farm produces, where it currently goes and what could be done differently.

Small changes can make a big difference

Rural Waste Sorted NZ offers some practical starting points:

  • Know your waste: Take a look at what your farm produces and identify opportunities to reduce it.

  • Reduce and reuse: Consider whether you can avoid unnecessary packaging or reuse materials before recycling them.

  • Find the right recycling pathway: Check what collection services and recycling programmes are available for different materials.

  • Talk to suppliers: Ask whether packaging can be reduced or returned.

  • Make it easy: Set up clearly labelled waste and recycling areas where materials are generated.

  • Get everyone involved: Good waste management works best when staff, contractors and suppliers understand the system.

The website also connects farmers with existing programmes such as Agrecovery, Plasback, Tyrewise and R.O.S.E. New Zealand, which provide options for managing specific types of agricultural waste.

Looking ahead: better rural recycling

There are also changes on the horizon. From 1 March 2027, New Zealand's new regulated Rural Recycling Scheme will provide a nationwide system for recycling specified agricultural plastics and agrichemical containers, with eligible materials able to be returned for recycling at no direct cost to farmers.

Better waste management benefits everyone

At Mahurangi Wastebusters, we believe waste reduction is about making practical changes that add up over time. Whether it's in our homes, businesses, schools or on farms, finding better ways to reduce, reuse and recycle resources helps protect our environment and build a more sustainable future.

Rural Waste Sorted NZ is a valuable resource for farmers wanting to take the next step towards better waste management.
